Passion with a Planet-Friendly Purpose
Patagonia was founded in 1973 in Ventura, California by outdoorsman and climbing enthusiast Yvon Chouinard, who turned his passion for high-quality gear into a business built on sustainable materials, ethical manufacturing, and environmental advocacy. Yvon Chouinardwas an avid climber turned businessman who wanted to make reliable climbing gear for himself and his friends. Chouinard expanded his business into apparel, but soon began to see the impact clothing has on the environment. He committed the brand to working against harmful industry norms to change the way things are done.
At Merchology, we relate to the Patagonia founder's desire to disrupt industry norms. Just five years into our existence, Merchology launched Zusa, our own responsibly made lifestyle brand. Like Chouinard, Dick Ward, Andrew Ward, and Ally Ward Delgado wanted to introduce sustainable apparel options for consumers, with the Wards focused especially in the branded apparel space.
While Chouinard launched Patagonia with climbing gear and durable rugby shirts, the brand has greatly expanded to include eco-conscious jackets, quarter-zips, pants, bags, and more. In 2022, Yvon Chouinard made the shocking decision to give up his billionaire status, transferring the company’s ownership to the Holdfast Collective, a non-profit trust. 100% of Patagonia's profits, after reinvesting back into the business, are donated to support the fight against climate change.
